Description
My dad, Rags Carter, was an ordinary kind of guy, a tall, slow talking, but hard-nosed southerner. By coincidence, he found early on that he had an extraordinary ability to handle an automobile and he became a key figure in the development of professional auto racing on the east coast. The road he took his family down was hardly easy, often perilous. But, in my heart, ever happen again, and so I intended to try to record some of the extraordinary history.
In the early years especially, I had to rely on stories that dad told me. For more recent times, I could count on newspaper clippings, my memories of countless miles on the road with Dad, and interviews with others who were out there on the circuit. Please do understand that if a date or a fact is off, I don’t mean to slight anyone.
I really would have liked to include the names of all the great drivers and owners who touched dad during his amazing career. That, of course, would be impossible. So, those of you who are still around, you know who you are, and we carters will never forget you.
